Mexico has become a benchmark in the world tomato market, whose exports are mainly directed to the United States, with a trade surplus of two thousand 306 million dollars in 2021 and sales to Canada, Japan, United Arab Emirates, United Arab Emirates, Belgium and Singapore, among other markets, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The tomato or tomato is one of the crops with the greatest technification and, of course, one of the most profitable, since a third of the planted area is located in protected agriculture, from which 67 percent of the production volume is obtained, said the head of the federal agency, Victor Villalobos Arambula.

By participating in the event: “Our Wealth: The Tomato”, indicated that the fruit has registered an average growth of 9.5 percent in the last 10 years. At the end of 2020, a volume of three million 271 thousand tons was obtained, in an area of ​​more than 45 thousand hectares and a per capita consumption of 13.4 kilograms.

It is the most cultivable vegetable both for national consumption and for export since it is produced in all the states of the country, led by Sinaloa, which contributes 20 percent of the national volume, followed by San Luis Potosi, Michoacan, Zacatecas and Jalisco, express.

“For these and more reasons, today we dedicate a space to its celebration, to recognize the producers of this vegetable, promote its consumption, value its benefits for our health, claim its historical and cultural value, as well as disseminating the scientific research that is done around the tomato”, highlighted Villalobos Arámbula.

He pointed out that the national cuisine is one of the largest in the world, with a variety of ingredients that reflect fragments of our history, elements of our culture and family memories, essential to understand why for Mexicans agriculture is more than an economic activity.

He explained that the tomato is a native species that Mexico it shares with the Andean peoples of America and is considered a center of diversification as it has a wide genetic variability, in size, colors and flavors, belonging to various accessions of wild, native and cultivated tomatoes.

At the conference organized in Morelos by the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of naming the tomato, whose word comes from the Nahuatl and has a presence all over the world.
