Mexico City, March 22 (EFE) .- The tomato or Mexican tomato (red tomato), one of the most profitable crops for the country, has registered an average growth of 9.5% in the last 10 years, indicated this Tuesday the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) of Mexico, Víctor Manuel Villalobos.
During the “Our Wealth: The Tomato” event, the official pointed out that at the end of 2020 a volume of 3.27 million tons was obtained, in an area of more than 45,000 hectares and a per capita consumption of 13.4 kilograms.
It is the vegetable “most cultivable both for national consumption and for export, since it is produced in all the states of the country,” said the official.
Production is headed by the state of Sinaloa, which contributes 20% of the national volume, followed by San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, Zacatecas and Jalisco.
“That is why we dedicate this day a space to its celebration, to recognize the producers of this vegetable, promote its consumption, assess its benefits for our health, claim its historical and cultural value, as well as disseminate the scientific research that is done in around the tomato,” said Villalobos.
According to Sader data, Mexico is a benchmark in the world tomato market, whose exports are mainly directed to the United States, with a trade surplus of 2,306 million dollars in 2021, and sales to countries such as Canada, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, United Arab Emirates, Belgium and Singapore, among other markets.
Villalobos recalled that the tomato “is one of the most modernized crops and, of course, one of the most profitable, since a third of the planted area is located in protected agriculture, from which 67% of the production volume is obtained. .
He explained that the tomato “is a native species that Mexico shares with the Andean peoples of America and is considered a center of diversification as it has wide genetic variability” in size, colors and flavors, belonging to various accessions of wild, native and cultivated.
Meanwhile, the coordinator of Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico, Eduardo Villegas, pointed out that the tomato, in addition to its nutritional value, “is the axis of the flavors of Mexican cuisine, constitutes dishes (dishes) of international gastronomy and is of fundamental importance for Mexico, since the country is one of the largest producers in the world”.
At the conference organized by Sader in the state of Morelos, a neighbor of Mexico City, the importance of naming the tomato was highlighted, whose word comes from Nahuatl and is present throughout the world. For example, he said, in Russian it is called “tamat”, emphasizing the presence of Nahuatl to name this product. EFE
