Inspired by a local Harlem classic with signature cocktails


The mythical cotton club in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, it was open during Prohibition in 1920 and was a showcase for the main emerging musical stars of the time. Today it has its humble equivalent in A Coruña. It is an establishment that bears the same name as this place, about which a movie has even been filmed, and which has been located on Calle Comandante Fontanes 17 for a week. Its main strengths are breakfasts and various signature cocktails.

Mari Carmen Martinez She is one of the owners (also responsible for other hotel projects in the city such as the Dry Martínez de Matogrande or the centrally located Clover Club). All the details are taken care of since the extensive cocktail bar available is inspired by Manhattan and each one of the drinks is located at a point on the map of this area. One of the indisputable attractions of the local drinks are the striking glasses where they are served, such as a golden bull that mimics that of Wall Street, a puffer fish, a gorilla or the face of a captain.

Sweet and savory breakfasts and themed drinks

It is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and at the Cotton Club they follow this maxim to the letter with savory and sweet options for breakfast. It is possible to start the day with a grated tomato toast with chopped boiled egg and braised turkey or another with cream cheese, with avocado and salmon cream that can also be served in a grilled stuffed croissant format. The waffles and pancakes These are options that will soon be added to the menu and the breakfast menus include coffee or tea and orange juice.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Nutella toast with banana and almond crocanti proposal is oriented. For those who are more classic at breakfast time or who come closer to the place towards noon, tortilla tapas are served that can be accompanied by coffee or a beer. Regarding the cocktails, the options are divided between distillates, rums, gins or vodka macerated with lemon to give it your own touch.

One of the most spectacular in terms of presentation is the golden bull, which is served with dry ice and arrives at the table fuming through the nose, in addition to being made from gin. Other highlights are the Marilyn and JFK, both located in New York’s Madison Square Garden because it was where the American actress sang the historic ‘Happy Birthay’ to then President Kennedy.

Both are served accompanied by a sparkler recreating that moment that is in everyone’s mind and the person in charge of the place defines the Marilyn cocktail as “spicy, exciting and fresh” and its main alcohol is tequila. The JFK cocktail, according to the owner, tries to be “serious, formal and chaste”, although she warns that “it is a wrong image that you can have of President Kennedy”. “If you look at it through Marilyn’s eyes, it’s intense with sweet notes,” she says, and it’s made from Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky. The sweet notes are provided by a raspberry purée and Licor 43.

The Blowfish It is a drink based on Gin Mare gin, St Germain (handmade elderflower liqueur with hints of tropical fruits, grapefruit, pear and honeysuckle), lemon, basil and cucumber. The Con-cheetah initially it was going to be King Kong but because of the shape of the container where it is served, the local partners considered that it was more similar to Chita, the name of the character that accompanies Tarzan.

This drink is prepared based on Santísima Trinidad rum, passion fruit puree, banana, cinnamon syrup and soy cream. “In general, they are very drinkable cocktails that are suitable for all audiences”, specifies Mari Carmen Martínez.

Differentiated environments and space for private events

The Cotton Club has two floors with different environments. At the bottom there is the possibility of close private meeting space with friends, an area with a striking photocall with neon and comfortable sofas. The groups that wish to can even bring snack food for their celebrations and in turn have a private cocktail bar.

The superior one is more adapted for the general public, especially in terms of decoration, more suitable for daytime environments such as breakfasts. Also, for the coming weeks, events such as cocktail workshops with some snacks and music, oriented in part to meeting people.

The Schedule They will be from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 15:00, Friday and Saturday from 17:00 to 03:00 and Sunday from 17:00 to 01:00. The public usual in these first days of good reception, according to the owner, are young people in their twenties and other clients of 30 years and older.
