Hand in hand with Holy Week in Mexico, one of the most important Catholic celebrations in the country, which will begin on Sunday April 10th, there is also the traditional beginning of Lent, so in this digital space we will remember what its meaning is.
What is the meaning of Lent? For the Catholic religion, it is a time of 40 days of internal purification, which begins each year with Ash Wednesday and ends with Palm Sunday (entrance of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem).
In that sense, Lent will start this 2022 the next March 2 (Ash Wednesday) and will conclude the April 10th (Palm Sunday and beginning of Holy Week).
According to historical information, its meaning represents the 40 days that Jesus remained in the Judean desert, located in Jerusalem in Israel, in addition to a flood that lasted 40 days, among other biblical references.
Lent comes from the Latin “quadragesima” which means 40 days before Easter, a religious period characterized by fasting and abstinence from meat.
It must be remembered that during this period people are used to fasting in some episodes of time, or not eating Red meat.
According to beliefs, red meat cannot be eaten during this festivity because for the religious, it represents the body of Christ crucified. For that reason, most Catholics tend to prepare dishes based on fish, shellfish, as well as some birds. (chicken or turkey) to name a few.
Especially on Fridays of Lent is when they prefer to cook with fish or chicken. According to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service, there are some species that can be prepared during this time.
Dishes with fish
* Horse mackerel: Its meat is very similar to that of tuna, with this fish the dish known as “Minilla Veracruzana” is prepared. To preserve its nutrients, it is recommended to consume it baked or in ceviche. The season for this species is during the months of March to May.
*Carp: Its meat is white and soft, similar to mojarra. The villagers usually fry, bake or paper it. It has an approximate weight of 400 grams and can be found throughout the year. In addition, this type of species currently exists in farms that preserve its development and distribution.

Refering to Holy Week, this is part of Lent. It is a period when various people perform worship activities.
According to the data, it begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Resurrection Sunday.
For the Catholic population, Holy Week commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, therefore, some people participate in activities related to the subject and classes are suspended. Some companies even grant at least two days, which are considered as days of worship, that is, they are established as non-working days, known as Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
