Festival de la Gordita attracts 10,000 visitors in Valle de Santiago – Dependencies Newsletters

Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, June 21, 2022. the 6th edition of the “Festival de la Gordita”, a gastronomic event in the municipality of Valle de Santiago, broke attendance records by exceeding 10 thousand people.

Last weekend, 25 traditional cooks from the municipalities of Valle de Santiago and León, Salamanca, Coroneo, Comonfort, Celaya and San Felipe, gathered at the Antigua Hacienda del Manzano in San Vicente de la Garma to delight with exquisite traditional recipes thousands of families from different states of the Republic.

The renowned Chef Felipe Gómez, from the Hotsson group, and the world champion chef, David Quevedo, also participated, who prepared gourmet gorditas; Likewise, the Venezuelan chef Freddy Sánchez was present, who shared the chubby’s sister dish, the Venezuelan Arepa.

The Secretary of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato, through the Directorate of Tourist Products, worked together with the municipality of Valle de Santiago to value the identity elements of the communities belonging to this destination and the entity, activating its gastronomy for tourism, traditions and culture.

In this edition, 10 beverage producers, 20 craft producers, and 5 artistic groups also participated, so that visitors could get to know all the tourist offer of the municipality. In addition, for the first time, a tribute to the historical peasant importance of the destination was developed -inside a colonial agricultural estate.

The municipality of Valle de Santiago is the 3rd. corn producer in the state of Guanajuato. This agricultural tradition is reflected in its diverse financial heritage and in the common practice of preparing gorditas; For this reason, in 2016 the first edition of this festival began, which highlights the aforementioned identity elements, providing an important tourist activation to the municipality of Valle de Santiago.

Sustainable practices were a resounding success at the festival, by promoting the use of biodegradable disposables; the remission of payment for the cooks and artisans of the municipality, allowing more than 60% of the participants to be from the host community, in addition to the coverage of the full scholarship for a traditional cook from Comonfort.

The event, which left an economic spill of 4 million 200 thousand pesos, according to the organizing committee, served as an important marketing platform for local tour operators who had a promotional space at the event.

The Festival de la Gordita, which to date has 6 successful editions to its credit, is consolidated as an event that pays tribute to farmers, ranchers, traditional cooks, chefs and a long list of actors who make our Mexican cuisine possible.
