The new coronavirus pandemic caused a series of lifestyle changes in the family. The eating behavior was modified especially for the children of the house as they had greater access to food, spent more time sitting down and had a greater number of snacks, reminds us the endocrinologist Carlos Del Águila, from the National Institute of Children’s Health.

The face-to-face classes arrived to once again modify the children’s diet, who were already accustomed to certain schedules and types of food. The specialist advises parents not to be alerted or compare the type of growth their child has had compared to other children during the pandemic because “children do not grow at the same speed, age and not even in the same task group, there are different factors”, says Carlos Del Águila, in an interview for the website of El Comercio, who warns that the most important thing now is to reorganize the feeding of schoolchildren.

How to feed the children during the return to school?

According to the endocrinologist, the ideal is to respect feeding schedules since it is not recommended that children have lunch beyond four in the afternoon. He reminded that feeding schedules must be strictly adhered to.

The children at home had the opportunity to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at their own times. That schedule must be kept at school. Sometimes the opportunity is not given or the hours of the school institutions do not allow it and there we make the mistake of giving a snack larger than usual. Then the boy has lunch at three in the afternoon and that is a problem”, warns the specialist.

That is why I believe that the return to school is an important opportunity to reorder meal plans at school. There are many schools that have a canteen, and that is ideal, in addition to having a nutritionist… The child must eat on time. Therefore, if the scholar will stay until three in the afternoon, he must have his snack and lunch. The kids can’t be biting. Many of them don’t eat the lunch box and they snack on it on the move, then they get home and their appetite goes away. All this is avoided by ordering the food plan”, adds the endocrinologist.

What are the effects on children of not eating on time?

Carlos Del Águila explains that there are studies that indicate that if children and adolescents do not eat breakfast, over time they enter a state of obesity because by avoiding breakfast they will be hungry later and will eat junk food or snacks. In addition, other children have a genetic predisposition to gain weight.

Another aspect is that, when snacking on unhealthy foods, which can be allergenic, they precipitate asthma attacks, allergic rhinitis, allergic dermatitis, among others.

A lunch box should not contain junk food, cookies with sweets, candies, cakes with abundant cream. It should contain short fruits, bread with hair, hamburger with lettuce. One has many options to put together a healthy lunch box, the difficult thing is knowing how to structure the diet, that is why the participation of a nutritionist in schools is importants”, expresses the specialist.

He recalled that obesity is a sign of malnutrition due to excess that leads to a series of problems such as diabetes, including type 2; hypertension, cholecystitis, gallstones and cardiovascular diseases due to excess weight. He recommended that those responsible for schools have established snack and lunch times. “Children should not go out for lunch at 3 or 4 in the afternoonThat’s not healthy”, reiterates Carlos Del Águila.
